The Greek word “SŌZŌ” is the most commonly used word in the New Testament for “saved”. It’s used to describe salvation and “being saved” such as in Ephesians 2 it says we have been saved (SOZO) by grace through faith. But it’s also used when Jesus heals the woman with the issue of blood in Matthew chapter 9. The scripture says, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well” the word “well” is the Greek word SOZO.
To fully understand what’s going on here the word SOZO means to be saved, healed, delivered and made whole. In Matthew 1:21 we read some very exciting news. It says “You shall name Him Jesus for He will save(SOZO) His people from their sins” Jesus came to save, heal, deliver and make whole the people of God from their sins, which includes all the effects of their sins. This concept of Jesus coming to SOZO begins to make even more sense when we look at the word for salvation in the Old Testament. In Exodus 14:13 we see the word salvation used and the Hebrew word is “Yeshu’ah” or Jesus in our language. Wait a minute. Jesus is Salvation? Yes, Jesus name actually means “Yahweh Is Salvation”. Let’s think through this again. “You shall name Him “Yahweh Is Salvation” for He will “SOZO” His people from their sins”. When Jesus began His ministry His message was “The time is fulfilled, the Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel”(Mark 1:14-15). This is the whole ministry of Jesus Christ to bring about God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven. The Church has the responsibility of continuing the ministry of Jesus the way Jesus did it, and that is why we are SOZO.
Luke 19:10 is a cornerstone passage for our community. The idea and concept of God coming to “seek and to save the lost” is centric in scripture. The word “to save” in this passage again coming from the original manuscript is the Greek word “SŌZŌ”. It is the idea that every human is in need of a savior. The word SOZO is best translated “Salvation”. It’s at the core of everything Jesus did and taught. It’s the central theme of God’s plans for all of creation.
Biblical Salvation (SOZO) is the concept of a good God setting a broken world right. To undo the works of evil and sin. To put an end to Satan’s kingdom (Matthew 12:26, Acts 10:28, 1 John 3:8) and to bring about His perfect rule to this world. We believe Jesus is the only way to receive salvation, as Peter said in Acts 4: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12 NKJV)
It is our desire as a church to share that message with all people. SOZO is a local church located in Belfair, WA that exists to bring God’s kingdom to earth and to share His salvation with all people – to see them saved, healed, delivered, empowered, and sent.
